What is a fiber optic verifier?

A fiber-optic verifier or cable tester (optical network tester) checks the basic functionality of a fiber-optic connection.

It shows whether the fiber is connected correctly, whether light signals are transmitted with low loss, and whether the connection is ready for operation.

This allows installation errors or damaged fibers to be quickly identified and corrected.

The combination of optical measurements and - particularly in the case of the LinkXpert M3 - additional network testing functions enables fast troubleshooting, commissioning, and documentation in fiber optic networks.

How does a fiber optic verifier work?

A fiber optic tester checks the optical connection in several practical steps. 

Typical procedure using Softing devices as an example:

  1. Optical power and attenuation measurement – (CableMaster FO) verifies whether the light signal has sufficient power and whether attenuation is within acceptable limits.
  2. Visual fault location (VFL) – (CableMaster VFL) uses visible red laser light to detect fiber breaks, tight bending radii, or incorrect polarity.
  3. Polarity check – ensures that transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) fibers are correctly connected.
  4. Active network tests – (LinkXpert M3) verifies connectivity to active components, detects connected devices, and displays network configuration details. 

All results are clearly displayed and, depending on the model, can be saved for documentation and reporting purposes.

This allows you to quickly determine whether a fiber optic link is ready for operation or whether faults must be corrected.
