Copper | Cable Verifiers

The first choice as medium for telephone, data and video lines still remains copper. More than ever, the material is used worldwide for the infrastructure of communication networks over short distances. Tendency rising, because the Port price still proves to be more favorable in comparison to the fiber optic price. technology (LWL) and new technologies, such as Power over Ethernet (PoE), are only available on the market on metallic conductors. The large number of cable testers available on the market today means that therere is the right device for your purpose. Before you buy, however, you should be aware of what you are looking for. The simplest devices only test the cable assignment. However, if further measurements are required to determine insulation resistance, characteristic impedance or channel capacity must resort to a high-quality line tester. Also for the simple cable installation in the house for video, telephone and data cables, the requires different measuring tools, which are designed according to the use.
The simplest testers for installations with coaxial, telephone and data cables are Verifiers: Wire mappers test with different functions. Our CableMaster devices are testers for checking the correct cabling.

The technology of data transmission via copper cables is far from being exhausted. However, the new technologies require a higher quality of cabling. In order to ensure that the existing cabling supports the higher data rates, appropriate tests must be carried out and documented before commissioning. In addition, existing networks must be qualified for the ability to upgrade. Tests up to 10 Gbit/s are already possible in the environment of the latest generation of qualifiers, regardless of the cable category or junction boxes.

Fiber optic cables not only offer a high data throughput, they are also immune to eavesdropping and interference. Fibre optic cables can therefore easily be laid in parallel with other supply lines - electromagnetic interference does not occur. The disadvantage of fiber optic cabling, however, is the cost. They are more expensive than copper cables but have a considerably lower attenuation and are therefore suitable for long distances. But even for short distances in LANs, optical fibers are increasingly being installed nowadays. Especially for the measurement and documentation of optical networks, the necessary measurement technology must be of high quality and future-proof.

New technologies such as SmartHome or the Internet of Things are increasing the need for even more bandwidth and higher transmission rates. The development of data transmission via copper continues and high transmission speeds will be feasible in the future. The WireXpert cabling certifier was already the first measuring instrument up to category 8 on the market in 2010 to support a test range of up to 2,500 MHz. Networks that can provide this performance on copper cables require cleanly installed infrastructures and stable installations. For installers, this also means that new installations must be sufficiently certified and documented. Existing networks need to be examined and demonstrated to be capable of migration at higher speeds.

Not all cabling certifiers are equal when it comes to the functionality of local and remote devices. Normally there is a combination of intelligent and non-intelligent device. This is not a problem if you usually work with a partner. Otherwise, be prepared to go back and forth between your workplace and the local device to troubleshoot and analyze test results. Our local and remote devices of the WireXpert series are practically identical. This means that the work can be done much more quickly and easily by a single person. Regardless of the situation on site, this interchangeability always offers technicians the opportunity to save time. Another aspect to consider is replacement costs. The connectors are the weak link in the chain. In some devices from well-known manufacturers, the reference cables are permanently connected to the adapters. If the connectors are unusable due to wear, the entire adapter must be replaced. Our adapters are equipped with modular ports, separate test cables are included. If a connector fails, all you have to do is order a new set of test cables.

Network certification, in particular the certification of fiber optic networks, is now almost entirely based on the functionality of the devices used for these tasks. If, however, this aspect of the business activity is to be successfully mastered, it means to focus on a flexible goal. The bandwidth is growing, the permissible damping values are decreasing, standards are being rewritten to take account of the constantly increasing speeds. All these factors require continuous improvements in cable testing technology.

OTDRs are part of the standard equipment of a fiber optic technician to measure distances and create test protocols. This is where the compact FiberXpert OTDR 5000 for singlemode and multimode fibers comes in. The high resolution of the fiber optic certifier with one of the smallest dead zones on the market provides standard-compliant measurements even of short distances in corporate networks. With an event dead zone of < 80 cm, the FiberXpert OTDR 5000 does not miss out on even the most successive connectors or manual splice connections, and automatic analysis functions facilitate evaluation.

The WireXpert 4500 certifier measures and certifies the length and attenuation of SM fibers (1310 and 1550 nm) and MM fibers (850 and 1300 nm) via interchangeable measuring adapters in compliance with the standard specifications. With appropriate MPO adapters, the WireXpert 4500 tests complete MPO/MTP links in just 5 seconds. MPO connectors (multifiber push-on) are standardized for use in data centers and support parallel optical transmission, which, like the upcoming 40 and 100 GBit/s Ethernet variants, will no longer be transmitted via single fibers in multimode applications, but via multi-fiber cables.
