What is a copper verifier?

A copper verifier is a cable tester (network cable tester) that checks the basic functionality of copper cabling.

It shows whether the wiring has been installed correctly, whether the line is electrically continuous, and whether data transmission is possible in principle.

This allows installation errors to be quickly detected and the operational readiness of the cabling to be reliably assessed.

The combination of wiring, continuity and—particularly in the case of LinkXpert models—additional active network testing makes these devices suitable for rapid troubleshooting, commissioning, and documentation in copper networks.

How does a copper verifier work?

A verifier for Ethernet networks checks the essential basics of a functioning connection step by step.

Typical procedure using Softing devices as an example:

  1. Wiring and continuity test – detects reversed, interrupted or short-circuited wires and displays the result graphically.
  2. Cable length measurement – (depending on model) used to detect cable faults or excessively long cable runs.
  3. PoE detection and load test – (on CableMaster PoE and LinkXpert models) checks whether the cable provides PoE or PoE++ and delivers stable power under load.
  4. Active network tests – (on LinkXpert TP and M3) verify the connection to the switch, DHCP server and, if applicable, the internet; perform ping or VLAN scans; and display IP configurations and connected devices. 

All results are clearly shown on the display and, depending on the model, can be saved for documentation purposes.

This allows you to quickly determine whether copper cabling is ready for use or whether installation or connection errors need to be corrected.
