High speed networks using fiber optics

Fiber optic cables not only offer a high data throughput, but also safety from interception and resistance to interference. This means that these cables can be easily laid parallel to other supply lines without any electromagnetic interference. Cost, however, is the drawback of fiber optic cables. They are more expensive than copper cables, yet they exhibit considerably less attenuation and are therefore suitable for long distances. Nevertheless, fiber optics are increasingly being installed for short distances in LANs. In particular, when measuring and documenting optical networks, the measurement technology required for this must be high-quality and future-proof.
